Egypt T-bill auction, 11 May 2010: 364-day at 10.54%, up 23 bps

At the Treasury bill auction dated 11 May 2010, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 10.09% (up 15 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 10.54% (up 23 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.

Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 7.1bn against EGP 4.0bn on offer, 179% of the amount sought, and EGP 2.5bn was accepted.

Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 9.72% to 11.66%.

A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 10.50%, so the government is paying 4 basis points more than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 110,542 after 12 months: EGP 10,542 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 879 a month.

That is EGP 230 more than the same money would have earned at the previous auction.

For shorter money: EGP 2,523 on the 91-day bill (3 months).

The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
