Egypt T-bill auction, 30 March 2010: 364-day at 10.44%, up 12 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 30 March 2010, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 9.71% (up 3 basis points), the 182-day bill at 10.03% (unchanged) and the 364-day bill at 10.44% (up 12 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 14.9bn against EGP 6.0bn on offer, 249% of the amount sought, and EGP 6.0bn was accepted.
Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 9.72% to 11.66%.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 10.58%, so the government is paying 15 basis points less than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 110,436 after 12 months: EGP 10,436 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 870 a month.

For shorter money: EGP 5,015 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 2,427 on the 91-day bill (3 months).
The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
