Egypt T-bill auction, 23 February 2010: 364-day at 10.71%, down 20 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 23 February 2010, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 9.63% (down 7 basis points), the 182-day bill at 9.97% (down 28 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 10.71% (down 20 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 24.2bn against EGP 6.5bn on offer, 373% of the amount sought, and EGP 6.5bn was accepted.
Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 9.72% to 11.66%.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 11.57%, so the government is paying 86 basis points less than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 110,714 after 12 months: EGP 10,714 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 893 a month.

For shorter money: EGP 4,986 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 2,407 on the 91-day bill (3 months).
The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
