Egypt T-bill auction, 19 January 2010: 364-day at 11.47%, down 19 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 19 January 2010, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 182-day bill at 10.31% (down 64 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 11.47% (down 19 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 18.3bn against EGP 4.0bn on offer, 458% of the amount sought, and EGP 4.0bn was accepted.
Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 9.72% to 11.66%.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 11.97%, so the government is paying 50 basis points less than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 111,467 after 12 months: EGP 11,467 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 956 a month.

For shorter money: EGP 5,154 on the 182-day bill (6 months).
The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
