Egypt T-bill auction, 17 November 2009: 364-day at 10.53%, up 27 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 17 November 2009, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 10.06% (up 37 basis points), the 182-day bill at 10.36% (up 39 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 10.53% (up 27 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 11.7bn against EGP 7.0bn on offer, 167% of the amount sought, and EGP 5.8bn was accepted.
Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 9.72% to 12.07%.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 13.09%, so the government is paying 256 basis points less than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 110,528 after 12 months: EGP 10,528 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 877 a month.

For shorter money: EGP 5,180 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 2,515 on the 91-day bill (3 months).
The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
