Egypt T-bill auction, 27 October 2009: 364-day at 10.24%, up 1 bps

At the Treasury bill auction dated 27 October 2009, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 182-day bill at 9.95% (up 5 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 10.24% (up 1 basis point). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.

Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 11.2bn against EGP 5.0bn on offer, 223% of the amount sought, and EGP 3.2bn was accepted.

Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 9.72% to 13.90%.

A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 13.90%, so the government is paying 366 basis points less than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 110,242 after 12 months: EGP 10,242 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 854 a month.

That is EGP 5 more than the same money would have earned at the previous auction.

For shorter money: EGP 4,975 on the 182-day bill (6 months).

The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
