Egypt T-bill auction, 14 July 2009: 364-day at 10.37%, up 10 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 14 July 2009, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 10.24% (up 9 basis points), the 182-day bill at 10.28% (down 1 basis point) and the 364-day bill at 10.37% (up 10 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 11.2bn against EGP 5.5bn on offer, 203% of the amount sought, and EGP 5.2bn was accepted.
Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 10.25% to 14.80%.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 11.77%, so the government is paying 140 basis points less than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 110,371 after 12 months: EGP 10,371 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 864 a month.

For shorter money: EGP 5,141 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 2,561 on the 91-day bill (3 months).
The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
