Egypt T-bill auction, 19 May 2009: 364-day at 10.38%, down 12 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 19 May 2009, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 182-day bill at 10.13% (down 35 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 10.38% (down 12 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 10.8bn against EGP 5.0bn on offer, 216% of the amount sought, and EGP 5.0bn was accepted.
Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 10.25% to 14.80%.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 9.21%, so the government is paying 118 basis points more than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 110,383 after 12 months: EGP 10,383 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 865 a month.
That is EGP 117 less than the same money would have earned at the previous auction.
For shorter money: EGP 5,066 on the 182-day bill (6 months).
The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
