Egypt T-bill auction, 3 March 2009: 364-day at 10.58%, down 99 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 3 March 2009, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 10.36% (down 16 basis points), the 182-day bill at 10.60% (unchanged) and the 364-day bill at 10.58% (down 99 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 14.3bn against EGP 6.5bn on offer, 221% of the amount sought, and EGP 6.5bn was accepted.
Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 6.34% to 14.80%.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 6.77%, so the government is paying 382 basis points more than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 110,583 after 12 months: EGP 10,583 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 882 a month.
That is EGP 987 less than the same money would have earned at the previous auction.
For shorter money: EGP 5,301 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 2,589 on the 91-day bill (3 months).
The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
