Egypt T-bill auction, 11 September 2007: 364-day at 8.27%, down 11 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 11 September 2007, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 7.59% (down 26 basis points), the 182-day bill at 7.91% (down 32 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 8.27% (down 11 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 16.3bn against EGP 3.5bn on offer, 465% of the amount sought, and EGP 3.5bn was accepted.
Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 7.45% to 10.21%.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 9.31%, so the government is paying 104 basis points less than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 108,265 after 12 months: EGP 8,265 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 689 a month.

For shorter money: EGP 3,953 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 1,898 on the 91-day bill (3 months).
The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
