Egypt T-bill auction, 3 April 2007: 364-day at 8.94%, up 4 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 3 April 2007, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 8.29% (unchanged), the 182-day bill at 8.75% (up 9 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 8.94% (up 4 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 10.0bn against EGP 4.5bn on offer, 222% of the amount sought, and EGP 4.5bn was accepted.
Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 8.62% to 10.21%.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 8.63%, so the government is paying 30 basis points more than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 108,936 after 12 months: EGP 8,936 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 745 a month.

The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
