Egypt T-bill auction, 13 March 2007: 364-day at 8.85%, up 9 bps

At the Treasury bill auction dated 13 March 2007, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 8.30% (down 8 basis points), the 182-day bill at 8.30% (down 10 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 8.85% (up 9 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.

Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 6.6bn against EGP 2.0bn on offer, 328% of the amount sought, and EGP 2.0bn was accepted.

Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 8.49% to 10.21%.

A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 8.08%, so the government is paying 77 basis points more than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 108,854 after 12 months: EGP 8,854 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 738 a month.

That is EGP 87 more than the same money would have earned at the previous auction.

For shorter money: EGP 4,152 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 2,074 on the 91-day bill (3 months).

The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
