Egypt T-bill auction, 7 March 2006: 364-day at 8.08%, down 1 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 7 March 2006, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 8.07% (up 2 basis points), the 182-day bill at 8.11% (up 5 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 8.08% (down 1 basis point). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 7.6bn against EGP 5.0bn on offer, 151% of the amount sought, and EGP 5.0bn was accepted.
At 8.08%, the 364-day rate is the lowest in the 38 auctions of the past year.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 9.79%, so the government is paying 171 basis points less than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 108,082 after 12 months: EGP 8,082 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 674 a month.

For shorter money: EGP 4,053 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 2,017 on the 91-day bill (3 months).
The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
