Egypt T-bill auction, 28 February 2006: 364-day at 8.09%, down 7 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 28 February 2006, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 182-day bill at 8.05% (down 3 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 8.09% (down 7 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 6.1bn against EGP 2.0bn on offer, 306% of the amount sought, and EGP 2.0bn was accepted.
At 8.09%, the 364-day rate is the lowest in the 38 auctions of the past year.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 9.53%, so the government is paying 144 basis points less than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 108,090 after 12 months: EGP 8,090 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 674 a month.

The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
