Egypt T-bill auction, 14 February 2006: 364-day at 8.21%, up 1 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 14 February 2006, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 182-day bill at 8.10% (down 4 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 8.21% (up 1 basis point). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 2.4bn against EGP 1.0bn on offer, 240% of the amount sought, and EGP 1.0bn was accepted.
Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 8.17% to 11.07%.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 9.94%, so the government is paying 173 basis points less than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 108,208 after 12 months: EGP 8,208 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 684 a month.

The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
