Egypt T-bill auction, 7 February 2006: 364-day at 8.19%, down 2 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 7 February 2006, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 8.09% (unchanged), the 182-day bill at 8.14% (down 1 basis point) and the 364-day bill at 8.19% (down 2 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 8.2bn against EGP 4.0bn on offer, 206% of the amount sought, and EGP 4.0bn was accepted.
Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 8.17% to 11.07%.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 10.16%, so the government is paying 196 basis points less than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 108,194 after 12 months: EGP 8,194 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 683 a month.
That is EGP 17 less than the same money would have earned at the previous auction.
For shorter money: EGP 4,070 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 2,023 on the 91-day bill (3 months).
The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
