Egypt T-bill auction, 9 August 2005: 364-day at 9.90%, up 50 bps

At the Treasury bill auction dated 9 August 2005, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 182-day bill at 9.76% (down 1 basis point) and the 364-day bill at 9.90% (up 50 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.

Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 7.7bn against EGP 2.7bn on offer, 285% of the amount sought, and EGP 2.7bn was accepted.

Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 8.17% to 12.39%.

A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 12.33%, so the government is paying 243 basis points less than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 109,896 after 12 months: EGP 9,896 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 825 a month.

That is EGP 503 more than the same money would have earned at the previous auction.

For shorter money: EGP 4,880 on the 182-day bill (6 months).

The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
