Egypt T-bill auction, 12 April 2005: 364-day at 10.79%, down 18 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 12 April 2005, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 10.14% (up 24 basis points), the 182-day bill at 10.58% (up 1 basis point) and the 364-day bill at 10.79% (down 18 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 7.8bn against EGP 3.4bn on offer, 230% of the amount sought, and EGP 3.4bn was accepted.
Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 9.53% to 12.39%.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 10.47%, so the government is paying 32 basis points more than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 110,795 after 12 months: EGP 10,795 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 900 a month.
That is EGP 179 less than the same money would have earned at the previous auction.
For shorter money: EGP 5,288 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 2,534 on the 91-day bill (3 months).
The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
