Tanzania T-bill auction, 4 September 2019: 364-day at 7.25%, down 25 bps

At the Treasury bill auction dated 4 September 2019, the Bank of Tanzania cleared the 91-day bill at 4.53% (up 19 basis points), the 182-day bill at 5.25% (up 7 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 7.25% (down 25 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of successful bids.

Demand was strong: bids totalled TZS 210.5bn against TZS 106.2bn on offer, 198% of the amount sought, and TZS 102.2bn was accepted.

At 7.25%, the 364-day rate is the lowest in the 26 auctions of the past year.

A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 8.16%, so the government is paying 91 basis points less than twelve months ago.

Put TZS 1,000,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back TZS 1,072,513 after 12 months: TZS 72,513 in interest before any withholding tax, about TZS 6,043 a month.

That is TZS 2,467 less than the same money would have earned at the previous auction.

For shorter money: TZS 26,250 on the 182-day bill (6 months), TZS 11,313 on the 91-day bill (3 months).

The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Tanzania’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
