Egypt T-bill auction, 5 August 2025: 364-day at 26.13%, up 32 bps

At the Treasury bill auction dated 5 August 2025, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 29.16% (up 39 basis points), the 182-day bill at 27.77% (up 9 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 26.13% (up 32 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.

Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 260.7bn against EGP 110.0bn on offer, 237% of the amount sought, and EGP 113.3bn was accepted.

Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 24.45% to 26.25%.

A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 26.24%, so the government is paying 11 basis points less than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 126,133 after 12 months: EGP 26,133 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 2,178 a month.

That is EGP 322 more than the same money would have earned at the previous auction.

For shorter money: EGP 13,886 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 7,291 on the 91-day bill (3 months).

The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
