Egypt T-bill auction, 25 February 2025: 364-day at 25.54%, unchanged

At the Treasury bill auction dated 25 February 2025, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 29.19% (up 85 basis points), the 182-day bill at 27.66% (up 24 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 25.54% (unchanged). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.

Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 207.4bn against EGP 110.0bn on offer, 189% of the amount sought, and EGP 82.4bn was accepted.

Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 25.27% to 32.30%.

A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 28.68%, so the government is paying 314 basis points less than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 125,539 after 12 months: EGP 25,539 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 2,128 a month.

That is the same as at the previous auction.

For shorter money: EGP 13,829 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 7,298 on the 91-day bill (3 months).

The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
