Egypt T-bill auction, 2 July 2024: 364-day at 26.00%, up 5 bps

At the Treasury bill auction dated 2 July 2024, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 25.80% (up 4 basis points), the 182-day bill at 26.00% (up 2 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 26.00% (up 5 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.

Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 212.7bn against EGP 115.0bn on offer, 185% of the amount sought, and EGP 27.1bn was accepted.

Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 24.07% to 32.30%.

A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 24.04%, so the government is paying 196 basis points more than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 125,997 after 12 months: EGP 25,997 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 2,166 a month.

That is EGP 54 more than the same money would have earned at the previous auction.

For shorter money: EGP 13,001 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 6,449 on the 91-day bill (3 months).

The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
