Egypt T-bill auction, 26 September 2023: 364-day at 25.83%, up 10 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 26 September 2023, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 25.22% (up 13 basis points), the 182-day bill at 25.70% (up 17 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 25.83% (up 10 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 123.2bn against EGP 65.0bn on offer, 190% of the amount sought, and EGP 49.9bn was accepted.
At 25.83%, the 364-day rate is the highest in the 52 auctions of the past year.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 16.93%, so the government is paying 890 basis points more than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 125,826 after 12 months: EGP 25,826 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 2,152 a month.

For shorter money: EGP 12,848 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 6,304 on the 91-day bill (3 months).
The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
