Egypt T-bill auction, 20 July 2021: 364-day at 13.28%, unchanged

At the Treasury bill auction dated 20 July 2021, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 13.11% (down 1 basis point), the 182-day bill at 13.25% (down 8 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 13.28% (unchanged). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.

Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 66.8bn against EGP 27.0bn on offer, 247% of the amount sought, and EGP 36.8bn was accepted.

Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 12.67% to 13.84%.

A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 13.61%, so the government is paying 33 basis points less than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 113,283 after 12 months: EGP 13,283 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 1,107 a month.

That is the same as at the previous auction.

For shorter money: EGP 6,624 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 3,279 on the 91-day bill (3 months).

The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
