Egypt T-bill auction, 6 July 2021: 364-day at 13.27%, up 4 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 6 July 2021, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 13.18% (up 1 basis point), the 182-day bill at 13.35% (down 1 basis point) and the 364-day bill at 13.27% (up 4 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 52.9bn against EGP 27.0bn on offer, 196% of the amount sought, and EGP 32.1bn was accepted.
Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 12.67% to 13.84%.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 13.12%, so the government is paying 15 basis points more than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 113,265 after 12 months: EGP 13,265 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 1,105 a month.
That is EGP 40 more than the same money would have earned at the previous auction.
For shorter money: EGP 6,674 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 3,295 on the 91-day bill (3 months).
The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
