Egypt T-bill auction, 7 July 2020: 364-day at 13.52%, up 40 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 7 July 2020, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 13.50% (up 21 basis points), the 182-day bill at 13.49% (up 30 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 13.52% (up 40 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 44.8bn against EGP 27.5bn on offer, 163% of the amount sought, and EGP 34.4bn was accepted.
Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 12.24% to 17.50%.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 17.32%, so the government is paying 381 basis points less than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 113,516 after 12 months: EGP 13,516 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 1,126 a month.

For shorter money: EGP 6,743 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 3,375 on the 91-day bill (3 months).
The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
