Egypt T-bill auction, 18 June 2019: 364-day at 17.23%, down 6 bps

At the Treasury bill auction dated 18 June 2019, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 17.65% (down 4 basis points), the 182-day bill at 17.59% (down 3 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 17.23% (down 6 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.

Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 47.7bn against EGP 27.3bn on offer, 175% of the amount sought, and EGP 34.2bn was accepted.

Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 17.00% to 19.98%.

A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 18.31%, so the government is paying 107 basis points less than twelve months ago.

EGP 17,235 in 12 months on the 364-day bill

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 117,235 after 12 months: EGP 17,235 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 1,436 a month.

That is EGP 64 less than the same money would have earned at the previous auction.

For shorter money: EGP 8,796 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 4,412 on the 91-day bill (3 months).

The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
