Egypt T-bill auction, 22 January 2019: 364-day at 18.90%, down 47 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 22 January 2019, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 18.48% (down 24 basis points), the 182-day bill at 18.83% (down 51 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 18.90% (down 47 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 100.5bn against EGP 26.5bn on offer, 379% of the amount sought, and EGP 35.5bn was accepted.
Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 16.43% to 19.98%.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 17.55%, so the government is paying 135 basis points more than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 118,904 after 12 months: EGP 18,904 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 1,575 a month.

For shorter money: EGP 9,415 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 4,620 on the 91-day bill (3 months).
The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
