Egypt T-bill auction, 29 May 2018: 364-day at 18.55%, up 14 bps

At the Treasury bill auction dated 29 May 2018, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 19.16% (up 3 basis points), the 182-day bill at 19.14% (up 23 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 18.55% (up 14 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.

Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 39.6bn against EGP 23.0bn on offer, 172% of the amount sought, and EGP 21.2bn was accepted.

Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 16.43% to 21.99%.

A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 19.70%, so the government is paying 114 basis points less than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 118,553 after 12 months: EGP 18,553 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 1,546 a month.

That is EGP 145 more than the same money would have earned at the previous auction.

For shorter money: EGP 9,569 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 4,790 on the 91-day bill (3 months).

The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
