Egypt T-bill auction, 9 January 2018: 364-day at 18.19%, up 50 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 9 January 2018, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 19.20% (down 2 basis points), the 182-day bill at 19.14% (up 15 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 18.19% (up 50 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 46.3bn against EGP 20.5bn on offer, 226% of the amount sought, and EGP 20.5bn was accepted.
Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 17.58% to 21.99%.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 19.83%, so the government is paying 164 basis points less than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 118,186 after 12 months: EGP 18,186 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 1,516 a month.

For shorter money: EGP 9,570 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 4,801 on the 91-day bill (3 months).
The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
