Egypt T-bill auction, 5 September 2017: 364-day at 19.21%, up 20 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 5 September 2017, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 19.50% (up 12 basis points), the 182-day bill at 19.49% (up 15 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 19.21% (up 20 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 39.7bn against EGP 18.0bn on offer, 220% of the amount sought, and EGP 21.5bn was accepted.
Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 16.11% to 21.99%.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 16.07%, so the government is paying 314 basis points more than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 119,213 after 12 months: EGP 19,213 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 1,601 a month.
That is EGP 198 more than the same money would have earned at the previous auction.
For shorter money: EGP 9,747 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 4,875 on the 91-day bill (3 months).
The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
