Egypt T-bill auction, 9 May 2017: 364-day at 19.05%, up 6 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 9 May 2017, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 19.22% (down 5 basis points), the 182-day bill at 19.27% (unchanged) and the 364-day bill at 19.05% (up 6 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 37.7bn against EGP 18.5bn on offer, 204% of the amount sought, and EGP 23.1bn was accepted.
Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 13.91% to 20.19%.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 14.23%, so the government is paying 482 basis points more than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 119,050 after 12 months: EGP 19,050 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 1,588 a month.
That is EGP 62 more than the same money would have earned at the previous auction.
For shorter money: EGP 9,636 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 4,806 on the 91-day bill (3 months).
The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
