Egypt T-bill auction, 21 March 2017: 364-day at 19.24%, up 69 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 21 March 2017, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 19.43% (up 4 basis points), the 182-day bill at 19.39% (up 73 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 19.24% (up 69 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 38.7bn against EGP 16.8bn on offer, 231% of the amount sought, and EGP 17.2bn was accepted.
Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 13.91% to 20.19%.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 12.13%, so the government is paying 711 basis points more than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 119,243 after 12 months: EGP 19,243 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 1,604 a month.

For shorter money: EGP 9,694 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 4,858 on the 91-day bill (3 months).
The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
