Egypt T-bill auction, 1 November 2016: 364-day at 16.84%, up 34 bps

At the Treasury bill auction dated 1 November 2016, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 182-day bill at 16.07% (up 20 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 16.84% (up 34 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.

The auction was fully subscribed: bids totalled EGP 12.6bn against EGP 12.0bn on offer, 105% of the amount sought, and EGP 12.2bn was accepted.

At 16.84%, the 364-day rate is the highest in the 32 auctions of the past year.

A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 11.94%, so the government is paying 490 basis points more than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 116,842 after 12 months: EGP 16,842 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 1,404 a month.

That is EGP 339 more than the same money would have earned at the previous auction.

For shorter money: EGP 8,038 on the 182-day bill (6 months).

The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
