Egypt T-bill auction, 5 July 2016: 364-day at 15.19%, unchanged
At the Treasury bill auction dated 5 July 2016, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 13.97% (up 1 basis point), the 182-day bill at 14.92% (up 1 basis point) and the 364-day bill at 15.19% (unchanged). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 25.3bn against EGP 15.0bn on offer, 168% of the amount sought, and EGP 15.0bn was accepted.
At 15.19%, the 364-day rate is the highest in the 15 auctions of the past year.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 11.94%, so the government is paying 325 basis points more than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 115,185 after 12 months: EGP 15,185 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 1,265 a month.
That is the same as at the previous auction.
For shorter money: EGP 7,459 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 3,494 on the 91-day bill (3 months).
The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
