Egypt T-bill auction, 10 May 2016: 364-day at 13.97%, down 26 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 10 May 2016, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 12.84% (down 11 basis points), the 182-day bill at 13.72% (up 3 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 13.97% (down 26 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 31.4bn against EGP 14.0bn on offer, 225% of the amount sought, and EGP 14.0bn was accepted.
Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 12.13% to 14.41%.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 11.94%, so the government is paying 203 basis points more than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 113,968 after 12 months: EGP 13,968 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 1,164 a month.

For shorter money: EGP 6,858 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 3,210 on the 91-day bill (3 months).
The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
