Egypt T-bill auction, 10 June 2014: 364-day at 11.12%, up 32 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 10 June 2014, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 10.57% (up 5 basis points), the 182-day bill at 10.89% (up 23 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 11.12% (up 32 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 20.3bn against EGP 8.0bn on offer, 254% of the amount sought, and EGP 8.0bn was accepted.
Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 10.54% to 15.41%.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 14.80%, so the government is paying 369 basis points less than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 111,115 after 12 months: EGP 11,115 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 926 a month.

For shorter money: EGP 5,443 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 2,643 on the 91-day bill (3 months).
The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
