Egypt T-bill auction, 11 February 2014: 364-day at 10.83%, down 7 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 11 February 2014, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 10.22% (down 10 basis points), the 182-day bill at 10.62% (down 7 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 10.83% (down 7 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 21.2bn against EGP 8.0bn on offer, 265% of the amount sought, and EGP 8.0bn was accepted.
Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 10.54% to 15.41%.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 14.05%, so the government is paying 323 basis points less than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 110,826 after 12 months: EGP 10,826 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 902 a month.
That is EGP 71 less than the same money would have earned at the previous auction.
For shorter money: EGP 5,310 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 2,555 on the 91-day bill (3 months).
The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
