Egypt T-bill auction, 4 December 2012: 364-day at 14.15%, up 125 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 4 December 2012, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 13.03% (up 53 basis points), the 182-day bill at 13.92% (up 119 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 14.15% (up 125 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 11.7bn against EGP 7.0bn on offer, 167% of the amount sought, and EGP 6.3bn was accepted.
Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 12.90% to 15.97%.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 14.93%, so the government is paying 78 basis points less than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 114,154 after 12 months: EGP 14,154 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 1,180 a month.

For shorter money: EGP 6,962 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 3,256 on the 91-day bill (3 months).
The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
