Egypt T-bill auction, 4 October 2011: 364-day at 13.86%, down 2 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 4 October 2011, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 12.79% (down 23 basis points), the 182-day bill at 13.33% (down 1 basis point) and the 364-day bill at 13.86% (down 2 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 22.4bn against EGP 9.5bn on offer, 236% of the amount sought, and EGP 9.5bn was accepted.
Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 10.25% to 13.88%.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 10.61%, so the government is paying 325 basis points more than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 113,863 after 12 months: EGP 13,863 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 1,155 a month.

For shorter money: EGP 6,665 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 3,199 on the 91-day bill (3 months).
The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
