Egypt T-bill auction, 19 July 2011: 364-day at 12.85%, down 5 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 19 July 2011, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 11.84% (down 9 basis points), the 182-day bill at 12.54% (down 9 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 12.85% (down 5 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 18.3bn against EGP 8.0bn on offer, 228% of the amount sought, and EGP 8.0bn was accepted.
Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 10.25% to 12.98%.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 10.84%, so the government is paying 202 basis points more than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 112,851 after 12 months: EGP 12,851 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 1,071 a month.

For shorter money: EGP 6,272 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 2,960 on the 91-day bill (3 months).
The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
