Egypt T-bill auction, 20 May 2008: 364-day at 10.11%, up 90 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 20 May 2008, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 9.21% (up 334 basis points), the 182-day bill at 9.90% (up 27 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 10.11% (up 90 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 10.5bn against EGP 5.0bn on offer, 210% of the amount sought, and EGP 5.0bn was accepted.
At 10.11%, the 364-day rate is the highest in the 51 auctions of the past year.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 7.74%, so the government is paying 238 basis points more than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 110,112 after 12 months: EGP 10,112 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 843 a month.
That is EGP 905 more than the same money would have earned at the previous auction.
For shorter money: EGP 4,948 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 2,303 on the 91-day bill (3 months).
The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
