Egypt T-bill auction, 6 May 2008: 364-day at 7.40%, down 18 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 6 May 2008, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 5.87% (down 7 basis points), the 182-day bill at 6.73% (down 37 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 7.40% (down 18 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 10.3bn against EGP 4.5bn on offer, 229% of the amount sought, and EGP 4.5bn was accepted.
Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 5.62% to 8.43%.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 7.91%, so the government is paying 50 basis points less than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 107,402 after 12 months: EGP 7,402 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 617 a month.

For shorter money: EGP 3,367 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 1,467 on the 91-day bill (3 months).
The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
