Egypt T-bill auction, 18 December 2007: 364-day at 7.44%, down 13 bps

At the Treasury bill auction dated 18 December 2007, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 6.98% (down 15 basis points), the 182-day bill at 7.08% (down 12 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 7.44% (down 13 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.

Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 9.7bn against EGP 3.5bn on offer, 276% of the amount sought, and EGP 3.5bn was accepted.

Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 6.82% to 10.21%.

A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 9.99%, so the government is paying 255 basis points less than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 107,438 after 12 months: EGP 7,438 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 620 a month.

That is EGP 132 less than the same money would have earned at the previous auction.

For shorter money: EGP 3,541 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 1,746 on the 91-day bill (3 months).

The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
