Egypt T-bill auction, 17 July 2007: 364-day at 7.66%, up 10 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 17 July 2007, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 6.88% (up 8 basis points), the 182-day bill at 7.36% (up 15 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 7.66% (up 10 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 8.2bn against EGP 4.0bn on offer, 205% of the amount sought, and EGP 4.0bn was accepted.
Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 7.45% to 10.21%.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 8.98%, so the government is paying 132 basis points less than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 107,664 after 12 months: EGP 7,664 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 639 a month.
That is EGP 103 more than the same money would have earned at the previous auction.
For shorter money: EGP 3,680 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 1,720 on the 91-day bill (3 months).
The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
