Egypt T-bill auction, 24 April 2007: 364-day at 8.26%, down 57 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 24 April 2007, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 7.53% (down 51 basis points), the 182-day bill at 7.56% (down 69 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 8.26% (down 57 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 21.6bn against EGP 4.0bn on offer, 541% of the amount sought, and EGP 4.0bn was accepted.
At 8.26%, the 364-day rate is the lowest in the 47 auctions of the past year.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 8.62%, so the government is paying 36 basis points less than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 108,261 after 12 months: EGP 8,261 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 688 a month.

For shorter money: EGP 3,780 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 1,883 on the 91-day bill (3 months).
The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
