Egypt T-bill auction, 13 February 2007: 364-day at 9.06%, down 64 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 13 February 2007, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 8.64% (down 52 basis points), the 182-day bill at 8.69% (down 55 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 9.06% (down 64 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 18.3bn against EGP 4.0bn on offer, 457% of the amount sought, and EGP 4.0bn was accepted.
Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 8.08% to 10.21%.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 8.19%, so the government is paying 86 basis points more than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 109,057 after 12 months: EGP 9,057 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 755 a month.
That is EGP 644 less than the same money would have earned at the previous auction.
For shorter money: EGP 4,343 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 2,161 on the 91-day bill (3 months).
The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
