Egypt T-bill auction, 7 November 2006: 364-day at 9.66%, down 14 bps

At the Treasury bill auction dated 7 November 2006, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 9.45% (up 4 basis points), the 182-day bill at 9.70% (up 5 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 9.66% (down 14 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.

Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 9.5bn against EGP 4.0bn on offer, 237% of the amount sought, and EGP 4.0bn was accepted.

Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 8.08% to 9.92%.

A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 9.30%, so the government is paying 36 basis points more than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 109,658 after 12 months: EGP 9,658 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 805 a month.

That is EGP 144 less than the same money would have earned at the previous auction.

For shorter money: EGP 4,852 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 2,363 on the 91-day bill (3 months).

The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
