Egypt T-bill auction, 10 October 2006: 364-day at 9.81%, up 10 bps

At the Treasury bill auction dated 10 October 2006, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 9.32% (up 3 basis points), the 182-day bill at 9.83% (up 27 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 9.81% (up 10 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.

The auction was fully subscribed: bids totalled EGP 5.3bn against EGP 4.0bn on offer, 132% of the amount sought, and EGP 4.0bn was accepted.

At 9.81%, the 364-day rate is the highest in the 43 auctions of the past year.

A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 9.13%, so the government is paying 69 basis points more than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 109,815 after 12 months: EGP 9,815 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 818 a month.

That is EGP 96 more than the same money would have earned at the previous auction.

For shorter money: EGP 4,917 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 2,329 on the 91-day bill (3 months).

The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
