Egypt T-bill auction, 21 March 2006: 364-day at 8.49%, up 37 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 21 March 2006, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 8.56% (up 49 basis points), the 182-day bill at 8.43% (up 19 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 8.49% (up 37 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.
Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 7.6bn against EGP 5.0bn on offer, 152% of the amount sought, and EGP 3.5bn was accepted.
Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 8.08% to 11.07%.
A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 10.66%, so the government is paying 217 basis points less than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 108,488 after 12 months: EGP 8,488 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 707 a month.

For shorter money: EGP 4,213 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 2,139 on the 91-day bill (3 months).
The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
